RobotMCP v3.0 release update
RobotMCP v3.0.0 is a major release update for the ROS MCP Server. Published on January 29, 2026, this release centers on a repository-wide refactor from a monolithic server into a modular, library-first architecture.
The latest patch release is v3.0.1, also published on January 29, 2026. It is a CI and publishing follow-up to v3.0.0, not the main feature release.
What changed
The biggest change is architecture. RobotMCP moved its tools out of one large server implementation and into focused modules for connection, robot configuration, topics, services, nodes, parameters, actions, and image handling.
For teams embedding RobotMCP into another MCP server or robotics workflow, v3.0.0 also introduces the new register_ros_tools() public API:
from ros_mcp.tools import register_ros_tools
Standalone users can keep using the existing ros-mcp command.
New MCP Resources
v3.0.0 adds MCP Resources so clients can discover and cache ROS metadata more efficiently:
ros-mcp://ros-metadata/all, for topics, services, nodes, parameters, and ROS versionros-mcp://robot-specs/get_all_robots, for available robot specification files
This helps agents fetch system context with fewer repeated tool calls.
Better client behavior
This release adds MCP tool annotations across the tool set, including read-only hints for inspection tools and destructive hints for tools that can modify robot state.
RobotMCP also adds an integration module for parent FastMCP servers. The module handles ROS bridge configuration through environment variables and registers RobotMCP tools, resources, and prompts with the parent server.
Release quality and examples
v3.0.0 adds Docker-based installation testing across pip, uvx, uv, and Python 3.10 through 3.12.
The release also includes a TurtleBot3 example and updates the Unitree Go2 integration toward service-based commands such as /go2/move, /go2/dance1, and /go2/stand_up.
Fixes
The release fixes packaging issues around ros_mcp.prompts, ros_mcp.resources, and the command entry point. It also fixes mutable default arguments in publish functions and resolves linter/type issues across multiple modules.
Upgrade notes
For users upgrading from v2.2.1:
- Standalone server users: no command change required. Continue using
ros-mcp. - Library users: update imports to the new modular registration API.
- Metadata-heavy workflows: consider
ros-mcp://ros-metadata/all.
v3.0.1 follow-up
v3.0.1 follows v3.0.0 with CI and publishing fixes. It updates the publish workflow, handles slow-test selection, allows pytest exit code 5 when no tests are collected, and bumps the package version.
